Why are November and December so toxic to our weight control efforts? Certainly there is abundant food available during the month long celebration from Thanksgiving to New Year. It is the season for non-stop parties and gifts of food from colleagues, friends, family, and customers. But more than just the food, there is a special atmosphere that descends on the Western World at the end of November.

The Holidays: An Emotional Feast

The Holidays: An Emotional FeastEvery year, I swear that I will be thin enough to wear my smallest dress to the office party. And every year, I dont quite make it. Oh, I can usually get into it by the beginning of February after a diet-obsessed, guilt-ridden January, but it doesnt mean as much then. Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzai whatever the celebration involved evoke the onset of primitive emotions. We wax nostalgic over the holidays we recall from childhood. We turn towards family and traditions that have been absent from our thoughts for the rest of the year. We indulge ourselves in the joy of giving and receiving.Cookies, and chocolates, and gift baskets bursting with preservatives, which we would politely refuse during any other time of the year, are now gratefully accepted in the spirit of the season. Food we would normally avoid creamed soups, fruit glazes, gravy, fruit breads, honeyed hams appear as comfort foods, warming and welcoming. Our sophisticated and world-weary veneer fades in the face of traditions that make us feel whole and contented again. The goodwill we feel demands a context and a continuity that was established many years ago. Each December, we trot out the same old carols, enjoying the familiarity of tunes we learned to love sitting next to a glittering tree and a roaring fire. For a month, we emotionally step back in time to reconnect who we are with who we were. Despite its current crass commercialism, we need the holidays to remind us of our roots, our values, and our beginnings. So this year, I am going to throw myself into the fray, eat whatever I want, and let the chips fall where they may. I can always wear something else to the office party and there will be innumerable occasions in the New Year when I can attain caloric virtue through deprivation and denial. This year, Im going to have guilt-free, unalloyed, and omnivorous fun.Bon Appetit!

Can You Lose Weight Without A Weight Loss Plan?

Can You Lose Weight Without A Weight Loss Plan?

The simple answer to this question is NO! However that is probably not going to leave many readers satisfied with this article that is supposed to be about weight loss plans. So in the next few paragraphs I want to tell you more specifically why it is a good idea to lose weight number one, and then why it is essential that you have a strategy number two.So why do we lose weight? Well actually much of the time it is because we dont like how we look. The problem with that is it is such a fickle feeling and doesnt provide enough incentive to buckle down to a "weight loss plan" and carry it out. We can get through life fairly unscathed socially when we are fat if we avoid certain situations namely anything having to do with a swimming suit or an athletic event. The major thing that allows us to do this is the fact that everyone else around us is fat and so we fit right in. We all, especially those in the northern climes that dont benefit from good amounts of sun, use food to elevate our mood and the fact is that it works. What we are starting to understand is that our motivation should be our health rather than our looks, and if we truly new how dangerous obesity is it would scare us enough that we would take losing weight seriously. The fact that obesity is a killer is plain. The big three killers for the obese would be art disease atherosclerotic disease, diabetes, and cancer. That obesity is a MAJOR risk factor for these killers is plain as day. Think with me for a minute about all the things that go wrong with an obese individual that send them spiraling toward and early death. First atherosclerosis from high fat and cholesterol diets combined with large floppy hearts, and hypertension that is caused by obesity. This just sets a person up for a major cardiac event that if it doesnt kill them the first time will on subsequent tries unless they get their act together. Now think about diabetes mellitus type II which has is main etiology in the insulin insensitivity that comes with obesity. This contributes to heart disease as well as renal failure, blindness, and neuropathies that result in either unbearable pain or in amputations. Pretty bleak picture? Make you want to hear about the importance of having a weight loss plan? This should be brief because it deals with life truths that are pretty obvious. You must plan carefully in life to succeed, learning in life from mistakes and capitalizing on opportunities. You must also plan to achieve discipline. These things are just not natural to humans who if left to their own devices become fat, lazy, and fail. So you must have a weight loss plan to: 1) lose weight properly, 2) lose enough weight to make a life prolonging change, and 3) to maintain your new lifestyle. Sounds easy right? No way! But worth it? For sure.

Successful Dieting Might Be In The Timing

Successful Dieting Might Be In The Timing

What is your daily diet like? Do you begin the day with a buttery croissant and coffee with cream and sugar? Is your mid-morning snack a bag of chips from the vending machine or a doughnut from the break room? And at lunch, do you go out for burgers or pizza? And when that mid-afternoon lull comes, do you hit the vending machine yet again? And does dinner consist of several courses of heavy foods, possibly a vegetable, and then dessert? Do you have a snack right before bed?If that sounds like you, then you probably do not feel very good most of the time. Aside from the doubtful nutritional value of the foods you are eating, you might consider the time at which you are taking in meals and snacks. When it comes to diet, its not just what you eat, but when you eat it. It is difficult to break the 3-meal a day cycle. In order to maintain a proper weight, you should only eat when youre hungry. Avoid eating when you are bored, happy, or sad. Emotional eating can lead to obesity. Food is fuel for the body, and cannot provide emotional sustenance.Emotional eating is a learned response to the stresses in our lives. It is important to assess why you are eating, and find other ways to channel that behavior. In time, you will find that you are only eating when your body needs energy.Eating often does not mean overeating, and does not necessarily lead to weight gain. Eating 5 or 6 smaller meals per day consisting of the right foods can actually speed up your metabolism, and help you lose or maintain your weight. This type of eating requires planning and preparation, in order to avoid impulse eating. These smaller meals should scattered throughout your day, 3 to 4 hours apart. Your metabolism will remain high, as well as your energy levels, and you will burn a consistent number of calories all day long. Some people think that skipping breakfast can help them lose weight. In fact, an investigation conducted in 1999 found that 60 percent of Americans skip breakfast. Eating a healthy breakfast is the key to weight loss. It jumpstarts your metabolism, provides you with the energy you need, and gets your day started right.Late-night snacking is a big culprit that undermines "weight loss" and management. Your body will likely store the calories instead of burning them. Often, nighttime snacks have little to do with hunger, and more to do with boredom. Making a change in your nighttime habits may help to keep you from snacking right before bed.Changing your eating habits will likely be very difficult. You are accustomed to 3 square meals a day, your mother likely taught you that. But making the change to more frequent, smaller meals throughout the day will induce a noticeable change in your attitude, your energy levels, and your waistline. With time, you will find that it is a style of eating that you can live with and enjoy for the rest of your life.

The Subconscious Control Of Your Diet And Weight Loss

The Subconscious Control Of Your Diet And Weight Loss

What determines human behavior and in particular your eating behavior? I have yet to come across a psychiatrist, psychologist or physician who can answer this question, yet this is the most fundamental question if you wish to initiate lasting permanent behavior change. If you can not answer this question, how could you possibly expect to help someone make a change in there diet or insure permanent weight loss? How can you move forward if you do not definitively know what is moving you forward. What determines human behavior and in particular your eating behavior is simply information. Can you do anything in your life without talking to yourself or seeing a picture of what you need to do? Of course not! It would be a little bit like trying to read from a blank page. No information = no action! The next question is: What are the components of this information? The components of the information that determines your emotional state and behavior are words and pictures. The next logical question then is how do you Recognize, Access and Change the information that is driving a behavior that simply does not work? This is where over 20 years of research and development come in with a program process now known as Burris MIND/FITNESS. MIND/FITNESS answers the last question with great precision and accuracy by virtue of starting out with the first two questions. In the resolution of any problem it is always about the question. Never has this been more relevant. Imagine if for the last 60 years psychologists asked, How can I fix it? instead of Why is it broken?! Why You Absolutely Must Take Control of Your Subconscious To give you an idea of the power of the subconscious, you can speak at a rate of about two to three hundred words per minute. Your subconscious runs at a rate of about one thousand to twelve hundred words per minute which is about four times faster than you can speak. This is why you can talk on the phone and perform other tasks like typing on the computer or driving a car because the subconscious is already programmed to do the other tasks. You can look at the conscious mind and the subconscious mind like a tug of war with a vat of mud in the middle for whom ever loses. The conscious mind is one-person on one side against the subconscious, which are four people on the other side. If the conscious decides to move in a different direction like changing your diet, losing weight, increasing your fitness program, quitting smoking or any number of other things, it is usually a losing proposition because you are simply out numbered with information. This is why it is so difficult to attain spontaneous change. Burris MIND/FITNESS will to make sure you have the most people on your side in the tug of war. Burris MIND/FITNESS is based on the reality that all behavior is emotionally driven or in other words your emotional state = your behavior. How you feel about things you do will always determine whether you move toward them or not. You will always move toward perceived pleasure and away from pain. The key component of any behavioral change program must include how to get control of your emotional state. So what is the biggest difference between MIND/FITNESS and any other behavioral change program? The question MIND/FITNESS asks is: How can I fix it? as opposed to Why is it broken? Example: If you get a flat tire on your car, do you want to walk back down the road to find out why you got the flat or do you want to know how to fix it so that you can keep moving forward? It is certainly not necessary to spend the last 40 years of your life analyzing the first 40 years of your life. It is imperative that you understand how to take control of the subconscious because the mind is like a car without an off switch and an unknown driver, if you do not predetermine the destination. If you decide not drive it, it is going to drive itself or someone else may get in the seat and drive it for you. Someone else driving might be ok if you agree to where they are going but what if you do not like where they are going? For the first eighteen years of your life someone else drove the car. This was usually with little or no consideration to the younger passengers. Almost every decision was made for you. You were told what to do, what to eat and learned how to react to any given situation. All of this information is stored in the subconscious and will arise randomly to determine your lifes path. There are also a tremendous number of variables that can occur in your initial programming that may have little to do with your parents. The bottom line still remains. Do you, at some point, want to drive or do you want to continue letting someone or something else drive? Regardless of weather your goal is a change in diet for "weight loss" , an increase in your fitness program or to take control of an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia. In the end the question you need to ask yourself isAm I completely happy with the mind running itself or do I need to take control of it? If your answer is I need to take control of it, then Burris MIND/FITNESS is the answer and the ultimate self help program.

Weight-Loss - How a Gusty Oversized Girl Shed Her Fat To Become Extremely Attractive

I was smiling to myself when I read the story of Linda (name changed but the story is true and factual). One day, a photograph of a big oversized girl in her early twenties was splashed throughout the newspapers in Malaysia. The photograph showed a plain looking oversized girl who was sitting on top of a hapless man, pinning him down by her sheer weight. When I read the news story, it told of how Linda was the victim of a snatch thief who went for her handbag, but this gusty oversized pounder of a girl was not going to take it lightly. She pounced on the snatch thief and pinned him down, and yelled for help.Oversized, and unflattering in looks, she spoke of having to walk alone back from work at a photo studio where she worked as a clerk, as she had no boy friend.Three months down the road, I was again surprised by another photograph. This time the photograph showed the same Linda - but as a dashing, slim and attractive girl. Gone was the fat, the flabby thighs, and what remained was a vastly improved Linda with new attractive looks, and a new wardrobe. How did Linda make that transistion from oversized and shunned lady to a desirable siren? What transpired was that when her photograph was published in newspapers nationwide, there was a boss from a Weight Loss and Slimming Centre who knew Linda would benefit from a course on dieting and weight loss and control. This owner sponsored her for this course, and so 3 months later, he had transformed Linda to a dashing beauty. The crux of this story is simply this : You can undergo a course of dieting and "weight loss" , and emerge a physically better person. Going for a course means discipline, and stems an air of finality that you are taking the initiative to get yourself back into shape and better health. For those who are in need, you can pick up a lot of pointers, tips and techniques for natural weight loss methods for free by reading testimonials and reports by others who have been through it all...and have gotten their shapes and sizes back. What remains is a self imposed discipline to take action. The battle of weight control starts in the mind, and that is where you need to start if you wish to have the best size, shape and weight. Once that is done, you are well on the road to an improved weight and better health.

20 Dieting Success Tips (Part 2 11-20)

SUCCESS TIP NO. 11: EAT YOUR LARGER MEALS EARLY AND SMALLER MEALS LATER You will feel better and lose weight quicker if you eat a large breakfast and eat a smaller dinner. You may also want to eat the majority of your carbs earlier in the day, saving a salad and lean meat protein for dinner. Eating larger meals during the part of the day when you are most active will help you to feel satisfied throughout the day and curb cravings for unhealthy snacks. SUCCESS TIP NO. 12: CONSIDER EATING SALMON OR MACKREL FOR BREAKFAST Yes this may seem odd, but it is one way to work in Omega-3 fatty acids that are good for you and add some variety to your daily diet. After a few months you may tire of eating eggs and bacon for breakfast. Substituting fish will give you the protein and healthy fish oils you need. You can try canned salmon or mackerel in croquettes for a healthier sausage substitute. Or you could simply eat cold leftover salmon the next morning with dill sauce. SUCCESS TIP NO. 13: USE LETTUCE LEAVES INSTEAD OF BREAD This tip can seem a bit odd at first but if you try it you will probably grow to love it. Instead of eating breads and buns with your sandwiches and hamburgers, why not try leaves of lettuce? You can make a double cheeseburger with onions, pickles and tomato wrapped in a whole lettuce leaf. Or you can make tasty wrap sandwiches with lettuce instead of tortilla and bread. This will help increase your good carb and fiber intake while giving you more variety in your diet. SUCCESS TIP NO. 14: EAT A FRUIT DESSERT Okay, we all want a little dessert sometime, but how do you have your dessert and your low-carb diet too? Why not try cheese with fruit slices or berries? Better yet, why not try cream with berries? You could even try sweet pineapples or strawberries with cottage cheese? Berries are sweet and high in fiber and nutrients and dairy products are high in protein. If your low-carb plan will allow it, this is a sweet and tasty alternative to more sugary desserts. An added benefit is that the protein in the dairy products and the fiber in the fresh fruit will make these desserts more filling. SUCCESS TIP NO. 15: GET YOUR FRUIT FRESH NOT SQUEEZED Fruit juice can be very tempting as a replacement for soda, but just how healthy is fruit juice? If you read the labels you will soon realize that in many of the commercial juices available at your local grocery store there is very little actual fruit juice. What you will find is lots of sugar water and other ingredients. Why not skip the juice altogether and eat a fresh piece of fruit? Not only does fresh fruit contain less sugar than juice, fresh fruit has fiber that is good for you and will help you feel fuller longer. SUCCESS TIP NO. 16: GO EASY ON THE MEAL REPLACEMENTS New meal replacement shakes and bars go on the market almost every day. These shakes and bars may claim to be healthy, but almost all of them, even the Zone Perfect bars, contain hydrogenated oil and sweeteners. So be careful. The bars especially may be only slightly healthier than a Snickers candy bar. Occasionally, they may not be that bad for you but as a rule you probably dont want to indulge in a meal replacement shake or bar every day. SUCCESS TIP NO. 17: IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE IT PROBABLY IS Low carb doughnuts and muffins? You can find these prepackaged low-carb labeled goods at your neighborhood grocery store and at many low-carb lifestyle specialty shops. That does not mean that you should make a habit out of eating them. While low-carb pastries may be tempting remember that they still contain all of the usual carbohydrate suspects: sugar or a sugar substitute and flour. They may be healthier than your typical muffin as an occasional treat, but remember to stick with the basics for continued low-carb success. SUCCESS TIP NO. 18: AT THE GROCERY STORE SHOP THE OUTER AISLES It will be easier to stick with your low-carb lifestyle if you learn the one common thread in all grocery store designs: the healthy foods are on the perimeter aisles. Think about it, when you go into the grocery all of the healthy stuff, fruits, vegetables, meats, and dairy products are arranged around the stores walls. You only rarely need to enter the center aisle areas in those few stores that stock butter and cheese in the center near the frozen foods. For the most part all of the foods that you need for your low carb diet can be found on the perimeter of the grocery store. Train yourself to start on one end of the outer aisle and work your way around. It will be much easier to avoid carb cravings and fill your basket with healthy items if you do so. SUCCESS TIP NO. 19: INVEST IN GOOD COOKBOOKS Cant figure out what to eat? Need some variety in your diet? Turn to a cookbook. Granted, not all recipes in a cookbook are low-carb fare, but you will be surprised at the number of low-carb and low-carb friendly recipes you can find in your standard Betty Crocker Cookbook. Cookbooks are great reference tools that often contain handy tips on purchasing cuts of meat and preparing meats, fruits and vegetables in new and exciting ways. Plus, new low-carb cookbooks are hitting the shelves all the time. So be sure to take advantage of these resources to try something new, different and delicious. SUCCESS TIP NO. 20: TAKE A GOOD MULTIVITAMIN We cant all do it right all of the time. Even the most conscientious food combiner may miss some healthy vitamins, minerals and trace elements in their diets. To help make sure you get everything that you need, consider taking a good multivitamin. Check with your doctor first for recommendations and you should be tested for anemia to see if you need a vitamin with iron. However, the longer you eat low-carb and the more red meat you eat, the less anemia will be a problem and you should be able to take vitamins with less iron. Your success is totally up to you. Assuming that you are an otherwise healthy individual, your body will do its part. Just remember to adhere to the low-carb diet plan that is right for you and add some variety to your meals to help you stay faithful to your health and weight loss goals.
